Alexander R. Raines, MD, FACS

Alexander Raines, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma. He is also the Director of Robotic Surgery, Co-Director of Medical Student Surgical Clerkship and Residency Program Site Director – OU Health Edmond Medical Center  for the OU Department of Surgery. He is also a Contracting General Surgeon for the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, and the Consultative General Surgeon for the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team.

Dr. Raines earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas, his medical degree from the University of Nebraska and completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Oklahoma, after which he became a board-certified general surgeon. He treats patients with a wide variety of general surgical conditions, including hernias (inguinal, ventral, umbilical, incisional) and gallbladder issues. He has a focus on minimally invasive surgical approaches with a specialized skill set in robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. He focuses not only on minimizing pain and recovery time, but he also works hard to ensure that his patients feel comfortable and informed throughout their pre-, peri- and post-operative experiences.

Along with his clinical practice, Dr. Raines is committed to education. He serves as the Medical Student Surgery Clerkship Co-Director and he is the Faculty Advisor for the Student Surgery Interest Group and Residency Director of Robotic Education. He also directs robotic surgery simulation courses and proctors surgeons who are new to adapt robotic-surgery into their practices. Dr. Raines is an expert speaker on robotic surgery, hernia surgery, surgical education and robotic surgery education.

While Dr. Raines works hard to offer his patients a first-class surgical experience, he also strives to improve the hospital and university. Through his roles on the OU Medicine Quality Medical Staff Oversight Committee, the OU Medicine Credentialing Committee, the OU Physicians Policies and Procedures Committee and the OU Edmond Peer Review Committee, he works to ensure that all patients treated within the OU Medicine system receive the highest level of care possible.
