Dr. Salem graduated from the Jordan University of Science and Technology – Faculty of Medicine in 2009, with honors. He completed an internship at the University of Aleppo – Faculty of Medicine in 2010. He joined the Meyerhoff Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center in Baltimore, Maryland as a post-doctoral research fellow in 2012. In 2013, he joined the internal medicine residency program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He subsequently joined the fellowship program in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in 2016.
Early during his gastroenterology fellowship training, he focused on optimizing care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He received the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Visiting Inflammatory Bowel Disease Fellow Program Award, and had the opportunity to be exposed to the clinical practices in inflammatory bowel disease at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota – an internationally-recognized and a leading IBD Center. He received the Richard F. Harty Outstanding Fellow in Gastroenterology Award upon completion of his general gastroenterology fellowship training.
He has been in the forefront of advocacy activities with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, leading an IBD support group for patients at the University of Oklahoma, and visited with legislators in Washington DC in IBD Day on The Hill, to discuss reforms needed to optimize care for patients with IBD.
He further pursued formal training in IBD, and completed an Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 2020; focusing on the care of complex IBD patients.
He was recruited to OU Medical Center in 2020 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine.
He primarily practices at the Crohn’s and Colitis Center at OU Physicians in Edmond, where he acts as the Director of the Center.
He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
