William J.J. Ertl, MD

William J.J. Ertl, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Orthopedic Traumatology. He has been a member of the Level 1 Team at OUHSC since 2002. The focus of his work in research and clinical practice centers on outcomes of trauma surgery, limb amputation and reconstruction (specifically the Osteomyoplastic Amputation Reconstruction), and collaboration with basic scientists investigating bone healing.
Dr. Ertl earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, FL. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. He continued his specialized education, receiving Fellowship training in Orthopedic Traumatology at Harborview Medical Center at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.
Dr. Ertl currently serves as Medical Director of Orthopedic Surgical Services at the OU Medical Center. He has fostered the establishment of the Amputee Clinic in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Rehabilitation at OUHSC, where he leads an interdisciplinary team of practitioners in prosthetics, physical therapy, and nursing. He also chaired the annually held Ertl Trauma Symposium for three years.
