Gary D. Dunn, MD

Associate Professor of Surgery


Gary Dunn, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma. A native of Oklahoma City, Dr. Dunn graduated from Oklahoma State University and from medical school at New York Medical College. He is Board-Certified in Surgery and Colon-Rectal Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, respectively. Dr. Dunn is the Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at OU. He was the first colon and rectal surgeon on faculty and established the specialty at OU. Dr. Dunn is nationally known for having authored multiple scientific papers and book chapters, as well as serving on multiple national committees.

Dr. Dunn pioneered new treatments for rectal cancer in Oklahoma, performing the first Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM), the first Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (TaTME) and the first Transanal Flex Robotic surgery in the state, which are all newer modalities designed to allow patient to avoid colostomy while still getting good cancer surgery. In addition cutting-edge care of colon and rectal cancer, he offers the full gamut of colorectal surgery care, including inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and anorectal problems.
