Successful surgery is only one part of the equation. The care you receive after surgery – especially emergency or trauma surgery – can make a significant difference in recovery for the short-term and outcomes for the long-term. Our Surgical Critical Care Unit is staffed with specialists who have received advanced training and are uniquely qualified to manage acute, life-threatening illness and injury in an intensive care unit setting. This care includes complex ventilator management and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the management of organ failure resulting from shock, infections, or major trauma. Our team performs daily patient rounds that are multidisciplinary and patient-centered with the inclusion of the family in the bedside discussions. We have adopted the concepts of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's ABCDEF Bundle to assist in deduction of delirium, improve pain management and reduce long-term consequences for adult intensive care unit (ICU) patients.
