The Section of Critical Care Medicine boasts multiple research endeavors. Our faculty are active participants and leaders in Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI), the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), and the Children’s Hospital Association Quality Collaborative. Each fellow is expected to complete a research project as per ACGME requirements, and we are confident fellows benefit from a wide-ranging research opportunities and excellent faculty mentorship.

Our section also leads unit and hospital-wide quality improvement projects, including the improving pediatric sepsis initiative. In addition, several faculty have earned grants for clinical and translational research.

Each fellow is expected to complete a research project under the guidance of a mentor and the scholarship oversight committee. This committee includes representation from senior clinical and basic scientists, providing research and career development guidance to augment that which is provided by individual research mentors.

The fellow has 15-18 months of protected research time to develop, conduct, and complete the research project. Research months have a reduced call schedule. This project is expected to lead to presentation of one or more abstracts at national meetings and publication of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal by the end of fellowship.

Research Support for Fellows

The Fellow Research Curriculum is a series of noon conferences offered by the Department of Pediatrics geared towards fellows from all pediatric subspecialty training programs. This curriculum teaches evidence-based medicine topics, Quality Improvement (QI) methodologies, critical appraisal of articles, and research study design.

Competitive intramural seed grant funding is available for trainees who wish to augment their research projects and gain experience with the grant writing process. Fellows are encouraged to apply for department and hospital research support grants for trainees.
