Admission Requirements

  • BS/BA in biology, sociology, psychology, or a related field with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or greater in upper division courses (last 60 credit hours).

  • Required Completed Coursework:
    • Two Semesters of each of the following:
      • Biology
      • General Chemistry
      • Organic Chemistry
    • One Semester of each of the following:
      • Biochemistry
      • Genetics
      • General Sociology or Psychology
      • Abnormal Psychology
      • Statistics, Research Methods, or Experimental Design

All required prerequisites need to be completed before you can be fully matriculated within the OUHSC MSGC program. If you are missing a required course, you should indicate your plan for completing it in your personal statement or resume. You do not have to have completed the course prior to the application deadline, but you should ensure that we know you are enrolled or are planning to enroll in the prerequisite course.

  • Recommended Course Work:
    • Molecular Genetics
    • Embryology
    • Anatomy
    • Medical Terminology
    • Upper Division Sociology and/or Psychology
    • Basic Computer Proficiency
  • Letters of Recommendation
    • Submission of three (3) letters is required
    • Recommenders should submit signed letters, on institution letterhead via the OUHSC online application system
  • International Applicants
    • TOEFL-- Any applicant whose native language is not English is required to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a minimum score of 79 on the TOEFL iBT®. The test must have been taken within the two years immediately preceding the requested semester of admission.  An original score report is required.  
    • Any international applicant who is a resident alien should submit a copy of their Resident alien card along with the application for admission.
    • International applicants are encouraged to review the OUHSC Admissions and Records requirements prior to submitting an application.
  • GRE Scores: NO LONGER REQUIRED!

  • 500-word statement addressing the choice of genetic counseling as a career 
  • Current CV/Resume
  • Transcripts: Applicants should submit transcripts from each institution where college credit has been earned. Suppose credits were transferred from another institution, a transcript from the original institution showing that credit must be submitted. Applicants who completed coursework at institutions outside of the United States (other than Study Abroad), must obtain an evaluation of international coursework and degrees completed through World Education Services (WES) before the application deadline.   • Strong candidates will also have a solid understanding of the profession of Genetic Counseling. This is most successfully accomplished through job shadowing or exposure to professional genetic counselors. Positive additions to an application also include volunteer or work experience in a related field. Examples include peer counseling, crisis or suicide hotline, domestic violence shelter or hotline, or hospice work. Experience working with individuals with disabilities and teaching experience is also considered helpful.
