Types of Clinical Trials

Anesthesiology

OU Health Physicians Anesthesiology has an active clinical research program with experience in industry-sponsored Phase II, III, and IV pharmaceutical trials for pediatric and adults. Interests cover the breadth of anesthesiology related subject matter and we continue to actively pursue new clinical research protocols.

Areas of patient care that have been the focus of recent clinical trials include:

Cancer

The Stephenson Cancer Center enrolls thousands of cancer patients in hundreds of open cancer clinical trials. We operate the state’s only Phase I Clinical Trials Program, where first-in-human treatments are administered by an experienced and dedicated staff. We also have one of the highest rates in the nation for ethnically diverse patients enrolled in clinical trials and our cancer specialists participate in more clinical studies than any other practice in the region.

Cardiovascular Medicine

Diabetes-Endocrinology, Metabolism and Hypertension

Our research has centered on autoimmune causes of common diseases, the relationship of abnormalities of autonomic hormones and diabetes mellitus on sudden cardiac death, and the genetics of susceptibility to diabetic complications. For information about our clinical studies, call 405-271-3604.

Gastroenterology

Our gastrointestinal research programs involve studying the etiology and pathology of gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, diarrhea and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). OU Health Physicians geriatricians participate in clinical research activities in three primary categories:

  • Healthy Aging: involves disease prevention, health maintenance and restorative approaches with older persons
  • Biodemography: studies in the biology of aging incorporating population statistics

Obstetrics-Gynecology

The OU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a national leader in NIH funded research.  We are conducting multiple clinical investigations in the areas of Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and General Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Areas of patient care that have been the focus of recent clinical trials include:

  • Therapeutic and cancer prevention trials in Gynecologic Oncology
  • Clinical trials investigating the effect of chemotherapy on cognition in peri-menopausal women, of aspirin on ovarian cancer, and studies to improve quality of life and reduce side effects in cancer patients
  • Antibiotic prophylaxis for labor induction in class III obesity
  • The effect of dietary high dose supplementation of omega 3 fatty acids in human obese pregnancies in protecting the fetus against excessive adipose deposition and weight gain (fetal overgrowth)
  • The use of adjuvants in ovulation induction in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Determining the relationship between protocol type for cryopreserved embryo transfer and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy

Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy

The clinical trials of OU Health Physicians Rheumatology are integrated with the Arthritis and Immunology Program at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF). Most of the work underway is related to autoimmunity or inflammation. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a particular focus of many of the medical specialists. Surgery

The Department of Surgery has an active clinical research program designed to facilitate industry-sponsored Phase II, III, and IV pharmaceutical trials. All faculty within our Department are actively pursuing new clinical research protocols and interested in collaborations that will benefit Oklahomans.

Areas of patient care that have been the focus of recent clinical trials include:

  • Pancreatic and colon cancer
  • Sepsis
  • Perioperative care including postoperative pain and preoperative antibiotics
  • Nosocomial pneumonia
  • Intra-Abdominal Infections
  • Complicated skin infections
  • Disorders of coagulation, including DVT prophylaxis
