Residency Program Overview

The Residency Program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center was founded in 1911 and was initially part of the Department of Surgery.  The Obstetrics & Gynecology Department was officially formed in 1961 and the residency program was incorporated into this department.  The program was initially accredited in 1952 and has provided excellence in education, patient care and research since that time.  Our goal is to train outstanding Obstetrician/Gynecologists who are able to serve as experts in the field and provide support and consultation to other medical specialists and the community.  In addition, our well rounded program prepares residents to enter the career of their choosing including private or group practice, rural or city practice, academic practice, or fellowship training. We have successfully matched residents from our program into fellowships in gynecology oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, reproductive endocrinology and infertility and urogynecology. Our outstanding faculty and residents are dedicated to this mission.

Our training is designed to provide residents with the knowledge and skills required to reach our goals.  In addition, our residents are also provided with several opportunities to gain an understanding of different systems of healthcare delivery at our different training sites.  Our main campus serves as the referral center for the State of Oklahoma and as a result, residents will participate in the full spectrum of obstetric and gynecologic care including the subspecialty areas of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.  Subspecialty training starts in the second year thus allowing residents interested in pursuing fellowship to begin that journey early on.  Our program also provides experiences in rural, governmental, community, and private practice locations.  While these sites are not necessary for our residents to acquire sufficient clinical experience, we believe an understanding of these various types of practice enhances the residents’ ability to choose their ultimate career.

As you begin your own journey, we invite you to explore the exciting opportunities available for training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center!
