Dr. Mathias’ research focuses on the growth and function of pulmonary blood vessels in the fetus and newborn. Preterm birth and exposure to lifesaving therapies in the NICU disrupt normal development of the lung and its blood vessels. Dr. Mathias aims to identify mechanisms underlying this abnormal development that can be targeted for prevention or mitigation of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and BPD-associated pulmonary hypertension. His clinical interests are the management of severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia and associated pulmonary vascular disease, including home mechanical ventilation.

Clinical/Research Interests:

Specifically, Dr. Mathias researches the role of redox modifications to protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) in pulmonary vascular development. Many vascular growth factors function by inducing receptor autophosphorylation. PTPs can dephosphorylate growth factor receptors and modify downstream signaling. These redox sensitive proteins are transiently oxidized and inhibited during growth factor stimulation; however, the effect of oxygen and hypoxia exposure on PTPs in the developing lung is not known. The Mathias laboratory uses a variety of cell, molecular, and animal model approaches to interrogate the role of variable oxygen tension on PTP function and early pulmonary vascular development.
