Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

A Message from the Program Director

Dr. Usman BaberWelcome to the University of Oklahoma Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program webpage. Our training program has an excellent history and track record of graduating interventional cardiologists with excellent clinical and procedural skills in both coronary and peripheral endovascular interventions including venous interventions. Previous fellows have succeeded in both academic and private practice settings. We have a group of excellent interventional cardiologists with a diverse background and teaching skills. Our volume easily supports two interventional fellows and each would end up with at least three hundred coronary interventions including complex interventions, over one hundred peripheral interventions including critical and acute limb ischemia, carotid interventions, IVC filter insertion and removal, venous interventions, AAA endografts, and a wide variety of hemodynamic and imaging modalities used in the cardiac cath lab including intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, infrared spectroscopy and FFR. Currently we perform some structural interventions such as ASD/PFO closures. We are also one of a few sites in the country to have a Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) and perform invasive PE interventions.

Our fellows rotate between the VA Medical Center Cath Lab and OU Medical Center Cath Lab. Currently there are two catheterization labs at the VAMC and four brand new state-of-the-art cath labs (and two additional EP labs) at OUMC which would include a hybrid room for structural interventions. The VA Medical Center is also renovating the cath labs and adding a third one. The two hospitals are located on the same medical complex and are connected with sky walks.

We have multiple weekly conferences which include cath conference, journal club, cardiology grand rounds, echo conference and others to cover all needed didactic lectures and much more. In addition, our interventional fellows are very active in our cardiology program where they help in training the junior fellows on cardiac catheterization techniques. They also have the opportunity to practice as diagnostic cath lab attendings at the VA Medical Center.

Oklahoma City is a great city to live in and has a lot to offer you and your family. The training program will give you ample opportunity to enjoy your stay here and have time to spend with you family or friends.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information about our fellowship program.

Thanks for looking and good luck with your search.
