Residency Didactic Curriculum

The OU neurology residency didactic curriculum is comprehensive and complex, designed to ensure that residents have the best possible opportunity to become competent in the six areas of doctoring (i.e., the ACGME six competencies).

Highlights of the didactic curriculum are:

  • P2 Essentials – key components of the clerkship curriculum for PGY-2s only (July)
  • Introduction to Neurology – core knowledge & skills best learned early in the year (July & August)
  • Handover Skills Training - formative assessments of communication skills regarding patient care (July & August)
  • Annual Conference Series – comprehensive core curriculum repeated annually (September through June)
  • Doctoring Skills - interactive sessions often utilizing simulation, focused on skills necessary to be an effective physician regardless of specialty (ACGME competencies "interpersonal & communication skills," "professionalism," and "system-based practice" (September through June)
  • Advanced Neurologic Skills - recurrent annual curriculum providing an introduction and progressive training of advanced skills pertinent to neurologists, including EEG, EMG, stroke, and movement disorders (September through June)
  • Academic Scholarship Program - annual, mentored research projects by residents with assistance from biostatistics professor and graduate student (September through June)
  • Journal Clubs - reviews of timely subspecialty articles with emphasis on methodology (September through June)
  • Leadership Skills – readings and interactive sessions focusing on skills of a team and business leader (March through June)
  • Healthcare Finances & Regulations – lecture series on the practical aspects of the business & politics of medicine (April through June)
  • Adult Morning Reports - held weekly throughout the year
  • Child Morning Reports - held biweekly throughout the year
  • Neurology Interesting Case Conferences - held biweekly throughout the year
