PA Program Prerequisite Requirements

Listed below are the University of Oklahoma prerequisites for the PA Program.

  1. A minimum overall and science grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  2. Good standing with the college or university last attended or currently enrolled.
  3. Completed application and supplemental form submitted by the October 1st deadline.
  4. Three letters of reference.  Recommend professional (not personal).  Make sure the letters have your first and last name on them.  The OKC program requires letters from references.
  5. One page typewritten statement on "Why I Wish to Become a Physician Associate."
  6. Resume

The CASPer test assesses non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics important for successful students and graduates of the program and is used to complement the other applicant screening tools.  Completion of the CASPer test is required; results are valid for one admissions cycle. CASPer results must be received by the program by the October 1 deadline.          It is the applicant's responsibility to make sure all requirements are turned in prior to the October 1 deadline.  

 

** The Physician Associate Program does not offer or accept advanced standing credit for any course offered within the program.  Students are required to complete all courses during their academic career at the program.  However, if another academic unit wishes to offer advanced standing in their course, the Physician Associate Program will honor it. The academic units include the Department of Physiology.

PA Prerequisites

A bachelor's degree must be earned from an accredited college or university prior to matriculation. No more than one science and one non-science prerequisite can be in progress after December 31st of the year prior to enrollment in the program. All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

  • College Algebra or higher
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Psychology elective (NOT Sociology or Anthropology)
  • General Chemistry I with lab
  • General Chemistry II with lab
  • Human Anatomy with lab**
  • Human Physiology with lab**
  • Microbiology with lab
  • Pathogenic Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, or Genetics***

** Note: One semester of Human Anatomy with lab and one semester of Human Physiology with lab OR two semesters of a combined Anatomy and Physiology course (A&P).  A cadaver course is preferred, although not required.  Kinesiology and Exercise Science courses will not meet the requirement.

*** Must be a 3000 or 4000 level biological science course.  Community colleges do not offer upper division credit.  Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry do not meet the requirement.  There is no preference for one course over another for Pathogenic Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, or Genetics.
