Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology at the OU College of Medicine is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Our three-fold mission is ServiceEducation, and Research. We continue to build on a tradition of excellence in academic medicine while bridging the gap between the basic sciences and the clinical disciplines of medicine. The Department of Pathology consists of 37 faculty, 73 adjunct faculty, and 16 residents/fellows.

About the Department

Our faculty is comprised of uniquely qualified and trained specialists who provide comprehensive, professional, diagnostic services in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology for all of Oklahoma and nation-wide.  We have a strong commitment to providing excellent pathology services related to Women's Health.

Our pathologists provide services at University of Oklahoma Medical Center and Oklahoma Children's Hospital as well as the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and numerous other laboratories and hospitals throughout Oklahoma and nationwide.  An important and vital factor in the Department's growth and development has been the growing network of hospital/clinic mergers and affiliations that are being established with our parent group at the OUHSC. This outreach brings several valuable benefits to the Department, including expansion of existing clinical activities and a broader community association with more direct access to patients requiring specialty care.

The Department of Pathology laboratories provide complete histology, histopathology, and molecular pathology services for physicians and patients throughout Oklahoma and nation-wide and for research scientists at OUHSC.  There are four specialized laboratories providing these services:  Histology Core Laboratory , Molecular Pathology Laboratory, Diagnostic Center for Alzheimer's Disease , and the Neuropathology Laboratory.

The Department also provides curriculum training for future physicians and allied health professionals and advanced training for future pathologists in the Residency Program based on competency models.  The Department also has a strong commitment to basic and applied research in the field of medicine.

We have four full-time Ph.D. experimental pathology researchers working in the areas of immunology, neuropathology, and cell biology, and a number of clinical staff with active research programs.  The Department has a growing Graduate Program, with an emphasis on the cellular and molecular basis to disease processes, leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Experimental Pathology.

Over the years, many outstanding faculty, residents, and friends have contributed to the success of the department; appropriately, the Department has established various commemorative endowments, fellowships, and studentships in their name.
