Medical Genetics Residency Program

The overall goal of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine's Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program is to provide residents with a broad exposure to all aspects of medical genetics and to prepare them to become outstanding medical geneticists with skills in the ACGME core competencies. They receive instruction in the scientific principles of genetics for evidence-based practice, for public health screening programs, and for understanding of laboratory evaluations and research. At completion, trainees are prepared to practice medical genetics and have the foundation to pursue life-long learning and a career in academics and/or research if desired.

Specific Goals of the Program

  • To provide a full range of clinical experience with all types and all ages of genetics patients, through a variety of clinical settings, to gain skills in various approaches to clinical and laboratory evaluation, management, and counseling;

  • To provide training by, and access to, a broad faculty of physicians, laboratory specialists, and research scientists in all areas of genetics;

  • To provide a range of clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory research opportunities in genetics to permit understanding of the field and allow the trainee to develop a research focus; and

  • To provide graduate didactic instruction, professional forums for discussion, direct self-study, and other educational opportunities in all areas of genetics, and to promote life-long learning.
