Clinical Experience

 

Inpatient Experience

All inpatient endocrine experience will be at the attached Oklahoma Children's Hospital at OU Health. Fellows will have at home pager endocrine calls and will have approximately 41 weeks spread out over their three years (24/12/5) and will typically be 2 weeks at a time.

Diabetes Pager Experience

Fellows will have 7 weeks of the diabetes pager each year. This pager serves to answer any parent and/or child at home who has a diabetes related emergency.

Fellow Sample Inpatient Schedule

When fellows are on call for 2 weeks at a stretch, they will have the weekend off in between so that they are not on call for more than 7 days at a stretch.

Outpatient Experience

All outpatient clinical experience will be at the Pediatric Endocrinology Section of Oklahoma Children's Hospital at OU Health and includes:
 

Continuity Clinic
Soon after orientation, fellows will begin having 1/2 day each week of continuity clinic that will continue through all three years. (See Clinic Schedules for years 1-3 below).

 

General Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic
Fellows will have the opportunity to attend individual faculty's general diabetes and endocrine clinics to get familiar with management of children with diabetes and common endocrine diseases

 

Sub-Specialty Clinics
SUCCEED Clinic Held twice a month, the SUCCEED Clinic teaches fellows the skills involved in the evaluation and management of children with disorders of sex development (DSD). This multidisciplinary team of pediatric and adult sub-specialists provides care and education for patients and families affected by Turner Syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and children having a Y chromosome and disordered sex development. Turner Syndrome Held once a month, the Turner Syndrome Clinic provides comprehensive care and support for patients with Turner Syndrome and their families. This clinic encourages fellow participation and provides fellows the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment and coordinate patient care with other subspecialties such as cardiology, audiology, nephrology, urology, psychology, and others as needed, as well as the primary care provider. (See Clinic Schedules for years 1-3 below).
Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic Held twice a month, the Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic provides diagnostic work up and comprehensive care for children with metabolic bone diseases such as rickets, osteoporosis, hypercalcemia, hypocalcemia, hypoparathyroidism, multiple/frequent fractures, vitamin D deficiency, and chronic diseases that impact bone heath such as cystic fibrosis, cancer, etc. Fellows will spend six months to one year during their second year in the clinic. Type 2 Diabetes Comprehensive Care Clinic Held once a year, the Type 2 Diabetes Comprehensive Care Clinic [Insert description here] (See Clinic Schedules for years 1-3 below).
