Didactics
  • Continuity Clinic (4 half-days per week): All continuity sessions occur during Y-week Residents are assigned to one of our 4 outpatient clinics (Sooner Peds, Sooner Peds North, Super Ninos, our community partner Bethany Children’s Health Center). Residents stay with the same continuity clinic throughout the entire year, and many often choose to stay with the same clinic throughout their entire residency.
  • Subspecialty Clinic: Every Y-week, PGY-1s spend one half-day in outpatient Cardiology and one half-day in outpatient Nephrology. PGY-2s spend their two half-days in outpatient Endocrinology and Gastroenterology. PGY-3s have one subspecialty clinic half-day each Y-week and spend it in Hematology-Oncology.
  • Individualized Curriculum (IC): All residents have one half-day each Y-week dedicated to IC. This time allows residents to supplement their education tailored to their interests with both short- and long-term elective experiences across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. If you can think of a learning experience, we probably have it! And if we don’t, we’ll do our best to help arrange it.
  • Intern-Specific Transitional IC:  For the first sixth months of the year, our PGY-1s spend their IC half-day in predetermined one-on-one or small group settings to provide more in-depth training with faculty and ancillary staff to improve overall efficacy and understanding of hospital systems.
  • Didactics: All residents spend two half-days each Y-week in didactics. This time includes topics like Social Determinants of Health, Simulation Curriculum, Quality Improvement (QI), Residents as Teachers, Value-Based Care, Research, Board Review, and more.
  • Admin: All residents have one half-day each week dedicated to administrative time to catch up on charting, emails, etc. Residents will have their same admin half-day each Y-week for the entire year, making it an ideal time to schedule appointments or other life occurrences that require prior planning.
  • Board Study: PGY-3s replace one of their subspecialty clinic half-days with dedicated Board Study time.

Noon Conference

Monday through Friday, residents attend daily didactics during the lunch period. These cover a broad range of topics including:

  • Board-Preparation: an 18-month curriculum covering American Board of Pediatrics subdomains, presented by a variety of subspecialists and general pediatricians with the goal of providing relevant clinical and board pearls in an active and engaging format
  • Case Conference: each PGY-2 creates and leads 1-2 case-based presentations throughout the year in a “solve the diagnosis” manner, where residents actively work together to develop differential diagnoses and workups
  • Professional Development Series: this monthly series for residents, fellows, and faculty provides a safe, interactive forum for shared experiences, generational perspectives, and common goals to help us guide one another in our roles as practitioners, colleagues, and educators,; topics emphasize the essential principles of professionalism, communication, and ethics as well as the real-life challenges of medical practice
  • Morbidity & Mortality: a safe space for residents and faculty to discuss difficult cases and review systems-based improvements to enhance patient care
  • Grand Rounds: local and national speakers present on a variety of timely, evidence-based pediatric healthcare topics to pediatric residents, students, staff, and community providers
  • Well-Being: Unwell faculty and residents cannot take excellent care of themselves, their colleagues, or their patients. We build well-being into our culture, first and foremost. If that is not in place, the amount of well-being sessions provided does not matter – humans simply do not thrive in a toxic environment. Well-being means holistic wellness – that's why we offer a variety of opportunities (both formal and informal) for our residents to address their well-being component in need. Examples include social events, financial seminars, meditation and mindfulness trainings, debriefs, free counseling, free
