How do you end a long hard day at work?
I like to reflect on the things I did well and things I didn’t do well and learn from them in a positive way. Then I would go to the gym and end the day watching New Girl or Schitt’s Creek.

What is the best part about the Ortho residency at OU?
The people. The atmosphere here is the perfect balance of hard work, learning/teaching, and enjoying what we do. There are high standards but being surrounded by people that want each other to succeed makes this a special place.

What has been your biggest adjustment since starting residency?

My largest adjustment since starting residency has been learning to leave medicine at the hospital. Learning how to navigate a work/life balance is something that I’m still working on but makes work more rewarding when my life is balanced appropriately. Thankfully, my wife and co-resident’s families are always planning fun outside of work activities and events.

What do you consider to be your top priority during residency?

My top priority when choosing a residency program was making sure that I would be trained appropriately whenever I finished residency. This means having the breadth and depth of knowledge of orthopedics that would set me up for success. OU’s orthopedic surgery program showed me very quickly as a medical student that graduating residents were extremely capable and prepared in the clinic and ORs.

How long do you think you’d survive in a zombie apocalypse?

If it was like the Walking Dead type zombies, I’d give my self a solid year or two but I do know if I could make it last 11 seasons like the show has.

A Professional Look - What is one orthopedic area all physicians should be aware of, regardless of specialty or subspecialty?

In concern for a traumatic injury/fracture, never to hesitate to order an XR!

What is your favorite weekend getaway when you need to get some downtime?
I love to get outdoors when we have the chance. Our favorite weekend getaways have been going to lake, skiing in Colorado, and hiking in the Ozark's.

What is personality trait of yours do you think has been most helpful to your success in residency?

-I would have to say optimism. Our program is really busy so its important to keep a positive attitude even when you feel overwhelmed and to remember that its a privilege to be able to do this work!

A Program Look

How would you describe OU’s orthopedic residency to someone completely unfamiliar?

-It’s kind of like being a part of a high achieving athletic team. We develop a lot of camaraderie very quickly, because we work hard together day in and day out and have the same goal of providing excellent care for our patients. I think that kind of shared vision and collective responsibility is rare outside of athletics.

What trend do you hope makes a comeback?
- Remember that time before social media existed? Ya... lets go back to that.

How would you define a “good day” on the job?
- Any day without a foot ulcer consult; also party scrubs with the team!

A Personal Look

What would you do if you could live forever?
- That sounds pretty terrible to be honest, but I’d probably be a much better golfer

Which member of the OU faculty would be your first choice to work with on a tough call night, and why?
• Dang, this is a tough question to answer. I haven’t gotten to work with all of the faculty yet, and the ones I have worked with have all been great. However, if I had to choose I’d probably say Dr. Agrawal. He is an awesome teacher, is really fun to be around, and let me get my hands dirty in the OR even during my first month as an intern.

What has been your favorite thing about living in Oklahoma?
• We’ve really enjoyed living in OKC so far. We love taking our dog down to the farmer’s market at Scissortail Park and have been impressed by the numerous great restaurants OKC has to offer. However, our favorite place in Oklahoma so far has probably been the Wichita Mountains near Lawton.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
- Teleportation. I’m extremely impatient.
