CAS 3440/ENGR 3440: OUPEMRAP Course Details
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Research Associates Program (PEMRAP) at OU is an original collaboration between the OU Health Sciences Center (OUHSC), Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering. OUPEMRAP offers undergraduate students an unparalleled opportunity to learn basic concepts of research and observe clinical, patient-oriented research conducted within an academic and medical environment.

Classes are held every Friday at 1:30 p.m. via video conferencing, in addition to clinical shifts. Students will learn about the process of conducting clinical research, including specific projects underway at the OUHSC Department of Pediatrics, Section of Emergency Medicine. Students will also participate in this research by actively screening and recruiting eligible patients in the Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health Emergency Department. This will occur during clinical shifts where students will receive firsthand ED experience while shadowing medical students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians.

We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2024 semester. Ideal candidates for this class are those pursuing a career in research, medicine, or an allied healthcare field.

Participation in OUPEMRAP requires maturity, initiative, diligence, and excellent interpersonal skills. In addition to learning about clinical research and acquiring familiarity with how the emergency department functions, you will also learn about careers in medicine from doctors, physician assistants, nurses, and medical students.

The expected benefits for the students in this course are:

   a. Exposure to hospital-based clinical research
   b. Exposure to clinical emergency medicine
   c. Increased knowledge of human subjects’ research, with certificates of completion in basic research, good clinical practice, and the responsible conduct of research
   d. The opportunity to receive training and a certificate in Basic Life Support
   e. Access to didactic lectures
   f. Potential for letters of recommendation
