Program Structure

Trainees begin July 1st of each academic year.

All trainees are involved in the following learning activities: research, professional development and teaching. For primary care trainees, clinical duties will be in the specialty of their divisions.

Trainees may enroll in the Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Science or the Master of Public Health degree program offered at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Fellows may also choose to take selected coursework that is relevant to their area of research, contingent upon approval by the Program Director.

  • Research Training and Scholarly Experience: Fellows will do an individual research project under the guidance of a scholarship oversight committee (SOC) that will meet quarterly. They will also be involved in grant writing, through obtaining funding is not a prerequisite for the research project. Fellows also participate in and are an integral part of a journal club designed to guide them in critical reading of the literature.

Structured educational experiences available to trainees include:

  • Journal Club: offered through the Section on General and Community Pediatrics. Meets twice a month, and provides and educational opportunity to examine, discuss and evaluate issues related to health care research through the medium of journal articles, case studies, research findings, and/or faculty development.
  • Education and Teaching: This area emphasizes the principles of adult education through a combination of didactic sessions, teaching opportunities, and observed and evaluated teaching. Fellows are introduced to innovative strategies and technologies for teaching and evaluation including clinical precepting, case conferences, grand rounds, advising students and residents, curriculum development, evaluations of learning, giving podium presentations at meetings, and professional presentations.

Structured educational experiences available to trainees include:

  • Pediatric Grand Rounds: offered through the Department of Pediatrics. Meets weekly, and provides opportunities increase knowledge of both general and subspecialty pediatrics and apply this to patient care.
  • Fellows as Teachers Series: offered through the Department of Pediatrics. Meets three to four times per year and seeks to enhance understanding of effective teaching techniques and improve teaching skills.
  • Professional Development: This area emphasizes the development of effective communication of research results. This supplements the education and teaching skills and introduces trainees to academic culture. Topics are presented in seminars and cover issues like time management, CV preparation, and writing workshops to name a few.

Structured educational experiences available to trainees include:

  • Professional Development Lunches: offered through the Department of Pediatrics.  Meets monthly and offers a series of interactive development sessions for all faculty, staff, fellows, and students interested in professional and career development.
  • Writing Center: offered through the Office of Student Affairs, the writing center provides support with a wide range of writing activities from getting started, using bibliographic software, to formatting and editing.
