Pediatrics
J. Kimble Frazer, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Section of Hematology/Oncology
Dr. Frazer was born and raised in Florida, and received his B.S. in Biology from Florida State University in 1991. He then joined the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, and completed 2 years of medical school & ~4 years of graduate school there.
He joined the lab of J. Donald Capra, MD in summer 1993, where he focused on finding genes expressed by human germinal center B cells. Dr. Frazer finished his PhD studies in summer 1998 and then transferred to the OU College of Medicine, and completed medical school in 2000.
He moved to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City where he completed Pediatrics Residency (2000-02) and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship (2002-05) and then was an Instructor from 2005-07. In 2006, he joined the lab of Nikolaus Trede, MD, PhD at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), where he did research involving the creation of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) zebrafish models.
In 2012, he came to OUHSC and started his own lab and is generously supported by the Dept. of Pediatrics, Jimmy Everest Section of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, and the Children’s Health Foundation, which named him the E.L. & Thelma Gaylord Chair in Pediatric Oncology. Since joining OUHSC, the lab has continued T-ALL studies in zebrafish, as well as B-ALL, which the Frazer lab discovered in another D. rerio T-ALL model.
Dr. Frazer's favorite part of leading a lab team is the fun, motivated, & smart people he works with. He learned mentoring from Don, Virginia, & Nick, and the joy of seeing young scientists blossom is largely why he enjoys being a scientist.
Dr. Frazer met and married his wife back in grad school, and they have 3 (nearly) grown children. Away from lab, he avidly follows Florida State football and Major League Baseball. He says he loves rock-n-roll, including lots of music he's "way too old to listen to". He also enjoys hiking in National Parks, skiing, and traveling in Europe, especially Italia.
