Meet the Residents

Gabriel Vidal, MD

Radiation Oncology Resident, PGY 5

ARRO Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee Member

I was born in Brazil, then moved to the US and graduated from Cameron University with a degree in Computer Science. After college, I worked as a programmer analyst at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation studying autoimmunity with a focus in systemic lupus erythematosus. I later attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma where I also completed my Internal Medicine residency. I then did an extra year as Chief Medical Resident. It was during my Chief year that I gained a true appreciation for academic medicine and its role in training the next generation of physicians. As oncologists, we have the unique opportunity to help our patients during one of their most vulnerable times. I consider it a privilege to have this opportunity. My professional interests include medical education, malignant hematology, and underserved populations/minorities.
I chose to pursue radiation oncology residency at the University of Oklahoma because of its unique setting. OUHSC is one of the only comprehensive academic centers in the country with seven different colleges in close proximity (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Allied Health, and Graduate College). Stephenson Cancer Center has been ranked among the top enrolling centers for NIH-sponsored clinical trials, which allows residents to be exposed to cutting edge research and clinical investigation. Our department offers a broad range of pathologies and treatment modalities including proton therapy. Being a part of a smaller residency, especially when compared to my Internal Medicine days, has allowed me to get to know my co-residents and their families at a more meaningful level.
In my spare time, I spend time with my wife and children. Thanks in part to my children I am now caught up with all Toy Story movies. I recently picked up cycling as a hobby and I'm currently exploring several trails in the OKC area. I also enjoy keeping up with our #radonc field on Twitter.
