Dr. Houchen is section chief of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, Department of Medicine, at the University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine. He is the George Lynn Cross Research Professor, Regents’ Professor of Medicine, and holds the Eason Chair of Oncology. His research interests are directed towards increasing our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that drive tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis in gastrointestinal and other solid tumor cancers. His laboratory is also interested in understanding the role of epithelial stemness in the regulation of DNA repair and mucosa restitution and barrier function in response to severe inflammatory injury. He received his medical degree at Temple University, School of Medicine, Philadelphia, completed his internal medicine training at the University of Maryland and his gastroenterology fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis. He remains on the faculty as an instructor of medicine, and Assistant Professor of Medicine until he came to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) in 2006, as an Associate Professor of Medicine.
